Chronic Wasting Disease Management Assistance Program (CWDMAP)

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission’s (NCWRC) Chronic Wasting Disease Management Assistance Program (CWDMAP) was created to assist landholders and hunters with additional opportunity to harvest deer and submit deer heads to aid with CWD surveillance efforts within North Carolina's CWD Primary Surveillance Areas (PSAs) or within 5 miles of a CWD positive.

  • Tags can be used on antlered or antlerless deer
  • Tag allocation:  3 tags automatically, regardless of acreage, plus 2 additional tags for every increment of 50 acres enrolled
  • Deer must be harvested using the weapon type allowed during the regular open season for taking deer.
  • Tags do not count towards season bag limits and are valid during any open deer season.

Application Requirements:

Applications can be submitted online via your Go Outdoors North Carolina account (see link below for instructions) or by calling 919-707-0050.  Prior to submitting applications, contact your District Biologist to discuss your deer management objectives, harvest history, herd status, and property details.

The following are general application requirements and instructions:

  • No minimum acreage requirements.
  • Individuals or entities who own, lease, or control exclusive hunting rights on property within a CWD Primary Surveillance Area or within 5 miles of any CWD positive may apply.   CWD Surveillance area maps are available at www.ncwildlife.org/CWD.
  • Applicants can only submit one application for all the properties they desire to enroll.

Program Guidelines:

  • Deer harvested on enrolled properties must be tagged with provided CWD tags or be validated with the hunter’s big game harvest report card using standard deer tags.
  • All harvests must be registered with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.
  • Mandatory CWD testing:   Hunters are required to submit the head from each deer harvested for CWD testing.  A map of CWD testing drop-off stations, check stations, and taxidermists/processors participating in the WRC's Cervid Health Cooperator Program is available at www.ncwildlife.org/CWD.
  • Carcass transport and disposal rules apply.   Visit www.ncwildlife.org/CWD for further details.
